Reblogging because I think this could be adapted into a cool activity. Or at least a creative brainstorming exercise.

    That’s kinda is fucking cool.

The Boy Who Waited.: The Story of the Loneliest Man That Ever Lived

    awarewolves:

Years before, a stranger once told me the story of the loneliest man that ever lived.

“Once upon a time,” he started, as if he was about to tell me a most-loved fairytale, “there lived the loneliest man. He lived in the loneliest part of the world. He lived the loneliest life ever to be lived by any human being.”

“Why was he lonely?” I asked. He smiled as if instantly he knew he was going to answer the question I have just raised.

“He was lonely because no one knew him,” he paused, as if to see if I still had any further questions. I sustained my silence. “He lived alone,” he continued. “He had no family. He had no friends. At one point, he questioned his existence and thought maybe, he might not be a human being after all.” He paused for a little while, as if trying to remember the next part of this unusual story.

“And so, one day, he tried to start a conversation with a rock,” he continued. “He said: ‘Hello, fellow rock. I’m lonely. Would you mind if you talk with me for a while?’ And of course, the rock would not give him a reply.

“And so he tried the tall tree, and politely greeted it: ‘Hello, tall tree. I’m lonely. Maybe you could spare me a few seconds and talk about the weather?’ And of course, the tall tree would not give him a reply.

“For years, day after day, the loneliest man that ever lived made an effort to talk with anything that he thought was capable of giving him back a reply. He tried the sea, but of course, the sea would not give him a reply. He tried the moon, but of course, the moon would not give him a reply. He tried each hill, each mountain, each flower, each grain of sand that he saw — but everything, it seemed, would not give him a reply.”

“That must be sad,” I said, more to myself than to the stranger.

“But one day,” he said, while forming a subtle smile on his face, “the loneliest man that ever lived stumbled upon a reflection of himself when he was supposedly going to talk to the clear waters of a lake.”

“‘Hello,’ he began, and suddenly, for the very first time in his life, he was surprised to see something talking back to him. ‘Hi!’ he exclaimed; and at once, his reflection gave him a hi back. Seemingly, it almost went on forever: the loneliest man that ever lived conversing with his reflection. However, in the few seconds before the sunset faded and welcomed the darkness of night, the loneliest man that ever lived witnessed his reflection turn into pitch black nothingness.”

He paused for a little while, as if he was waiting for my reaction.

And so I asked, “Was he happy? In that very day, did the loneliest man that ever lived manage to put on a smile on his face?” I waited for his response. I was hoping somehow that yes, perhaps, the loneliest man that ever lived was happy even for just one day in his lonely, lonely existence.

“Ah, good question!” he exclaimed, as if no one has ever asked him the question I have just raised. “Was he happy, you ask? How does one define happiness, anyway?” He paused, as he thought on what he would say next.

“Imagine yourself in the shoes of the loneliest man that ever lived. Finally, this momentous day of your existence comes. Finally, a miracle seems to have happened! Something is talking back to you, and the years of silence you have endured might finally be buried in your past forever. So, yes, you might bring yourself to finally smile, and think: I’m happy. For the very first time in my life, I am indeed not the loneliest man in this whole wide universe, and I am the opposite of lonely. Me, myself — I’m that: happy.”

“So, he was happy, yes? The loneliest man that ever lived, for one day, he was happy?” I said, pleased with the realization that yes, he might have been happy even just for one single day of his entire lonely, lonely life.

“But think of the moment when the reflection of the loneliest man that ever lived is turned into just pitch black nothingness. In that moment, would you still call yourself happy? If such happiness that have existed proves to be just an illusion, wouldn’t that certain happiness maybe just an illusion as well?”

I thought of it hard. Maybe for five minutes. Maybe for a whole expanse of an hour, even. In the end, I realized what the stranger was forcing me to think about.

“I understand,” I finally said. “I finally understand. Surely, this man, he was the loneliest man that ever lived.”

“Yes,” the stranger replied, “Indeed, he was the loneliest man that ever lived.”
